Contributions to ECOS 2023
International Conference on Efficiency, Cost, Optimization, Simulation and Environmental Impact of Energy Systems 2023
2023/08/07
At ECOS 2023 in Las Palmas, CleanCircles members presented two insightful papers on the optimisation of an iron reduction plant and advanced exergy analyses of the flash iron making process.

The 36th International Conference on Efficiency, Cost, Optimisation, Simulation and Environmental Impact of Energy Systems (ECOS) was held in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, from 25 to 30 June 2023.
ECOS is the name of a series of international conferences dealing with modern aspects of thermal sciences, with a special focus on thermodynamics and its applications in energy conversion systems and processes.
The papers in detail
Corbean, E.; Neumann, J.; Dammel, F.; Stephan, P.; Ulbrich, S. (2023):
Techno-Economic Optimization of an Innovative Plant for Sustainable Iron Reduction. Proceedings of ECOS 2023 – the 36th International Conference on Efficiency, Cost, Optimization, Simulation and Environmental Impact of Energy Systems,
https://doi.org/10.52202/069564-0117
The authors develop a techno-economic model for an innovative reduction plant using flash iron reduction technology. The flash process uses the fine iron ore particles directly without additional pre-treatment and, in contrast to other gas-based iron production processes, operates at very high temperatures.
Neumann, J.; Dammel, F.; Stephan, P. (2023):
Advanced Exergy Analysis of the Flash Ironmaking Process. Proceedings of ECOS 2023 – the 36th International Conference on Efficiency, Cost, Optimization, Simulation and Environmental Impact of Energy Systems,
https://doi.org/10.52202/069564-0016
The authors use conventional and advanced exergy analyses to analyse the flash ironmaking process. The results show, among other things, an exergetic system efficiency of 53.7 % for a defined base case, with the largest share of exergy dissipation due to unavoidable losses.
