60,000 CPU cores, 563 terabytes of main memory (RAM) and millions of simulated iron particles. The Lichtenberg II supercomputer at TU Darmstadt's high-performance computing center works diligently on the scientific breakthroughs of tomorrow – always accompanied by the steady whirring of the cooling system.

Niklas Kolorz, award-winning science journalist and content creator on YouTube, made a visit to TU Darmstadt. Together with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Hasse and doctoral researcher Thomas Krenn, he took a close look at iron as a carrier and storage medium for renewable energy.

What influence can iron as an energy carrier have on our future? How does the iron cycle work? And why do we need supercomputers in addition to experiments and theory for research into the energy transition?

For answers to those and other questions watch the video atEnergy storage of the future: Is iron the new coal(German with automatic English captions).
