Abstract:

Vibrotactile technology is incorporated in many devices such as smart phones, game consoles and vibrotactile gaming vests. This technology provides an opportunity for vibrotactile communication. Especially persons with a combined hearing and visual disability (i.e. deafblindness) rely heavily on tactile communication. I will present some of the work that we have done on vibrotactile Morse code and Social Haptic Communication. This includes psychophysical studies that we performed to determine the optimal placement of the vibration motors as well as conversations with users with deafblindness about their wishes when it comes to tactile communication devices.
