Abstract:

When we perform actions in daily life we encounter a lot of uncertainty. Part of this uncertainty arises because the situation is constantly changing, including changes caused by ourselves moving. Somehow we have to consider all this uncertainty. In my presentation I will argue that people do not plan an action and use feedback to correct deviations from the plan, but rather that they constantly update the plan according to the instantaneous circumstances. I will argue that people constantly respond to any change in the target or in the feedback about their own movement. They also constantly consider the positions of obstacles. Moreover, it costs them almost no extra time to divert their action towards a different target if a better option appears or an existing option becomes more suitable for some reason. I will also discuss a possible disadvantage of constantly responding to everything that happens: people are unable to stop responding when doing so is disadvantageous.
