The Welcome Centre offers dedicated advice and support in non-acadenmic aspects of life as well as special networking offerings.

Language courses

TU Darmstadt Welcome Centre and Language Resource Centre offer online A1 and A2 level German compact courses to international doctoral students and postdoctoral employees. The prerequisite for this opportunity is a TU-ID.

A1 level

In the German course for doctoral students and postdoctoral employees at level A1, participants practise understanding and using familiar, everyday expressions and very simple sentences twice a week for a total of 40 lessons at the lower level of “Elementary language use”.

The following language activities and communication situations are practised: introducing oneself and others, answering simple questions about oneself, e.g. about where one lives and about friends and acquaintances. They practise communicating in a simple way, especially in situations where the other person speaks slowly and clearly and is willing to help them understand.

A2 level

In the German course for doctoral students and postdoctoral employees at level A2, participants practise twice a week for a total of 40 lessons at the upper level of “Elementary language use” to understand sentences and frequently used expressions that relate to areas of immediate importance. These include personal and family information, shopping, work and the local area.

The following language activities and communication situations are practised: Communicating in simple, everyday situations involving a simple and direct exchange of information about familiar and common things. They also practise using simple means to describe their own background and education, their immediate surroundings and aspects relating to basic needs.

Access to the A2 level course is through a placement text.

Participation in these compact courses does not guarantee any subsequent passing of a TELC certificate for the purpose of permanent residence or naturalisation.
