Exhibition review by Svea Juliette Gallo (duration: 03:25)

The Kunstforum der TU Darmstadt dedicates the solo exhibition »Cristof Yvoré STILL LIFE« to the French painter Cristof Yvoré from November 12, 2022.

Born in Tours in 1967, died in Marseille in 2013, Cristof Yvoré centers his paintings for over twenty years around a few themes: Still life or details of interiors. As if painted from memory, these paintings are devoid of any desire for naturalistic rendering of the chosen detail or object. A spot of light on the wall of a room, the folds of a drawn curtain, a table with a vase on it, empty or filled with flowers of all shapes and colors. A recognizable everyday object is reduced to its simplest form of expression.

For Cristof Yvoré, the study of still life is first and foremost an exploration of painting and the painterly means of expression itself. »I don't do any preliminary research, I don't look at illustrations, I don't copy a mode, I simply remember a previously observed object«, he once explained.

»Each painting is a unique event that cannot be repeated.«

Today, Yvoré's works are in the collections of the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Fonds Regional d'Art Contemporain in Marseille, and the Hudson Valley for Contemporary Art in New York, among others.

»I believe that nothing can be more abstract, more unreal, than what we actually see.«

Giorgio Morandi

Painting has a high priority at the Kunstforum der TU Darmstadt. From March to July 2019, the exhibition »Susannah Martin JUST NATURE« was dedicated to the works of the American painter Susannah Martin, which was shown for the first time on this scale in the Rhine-Main region. Designs of freedom, expressed in the relationship between man and nature, are the great theme of this artist.

Cristof Yvoré

The French painter Cristof Yvoré was born in Tours in 1967 and died in Marseille (FR) in 2013. His expressive still lifes are in the collections of the Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx (US) and M WOODS, Beijing (CN), among others.

The exhibition »Cristof Yvoré STILL LIFE« presents from November 12, 2022, to March 26, 2023, a French painter who — apparently — could not be in greater contrast to Susannah Martin: His quiet paintings are always devoid of people. It is the simple, everyday things inside the house that are primarily found as motifs. If for Susannah Martin it is the art-historical theme of the »nude in the landscape«, for Cristof Yvoré it is the classical »still life« and the »interior« around which his painting revolves.

»Cristof Yvoré STILL LIFE« is a cooperation with FRAC Provence-Alpes-Côte d´Azur, FRAC Auvergne, and Gallery Zeno X Antwerp.
