Invited Talk: Adaptive Locomotion of Robots and Humans

Prof. Koh Hosoda, Graduate School of Engineering Kyoto University

2023/11/06

On November 6, 2023, Professor Koh Hosoda delivered a lecture as part of the LokoAssist biweekly seminar series.

For the past 20 years, Professor Hosoda has dedicated himself to studying adaptive locomotion in both robots and humans. His primary focus has been on developing walking robots with human-like musculoskeletal systems to generate hypotheses about human locomotion. In addition, he and his colleagues have closely observed human behavior to understand the fundamental principles of locomotion.

In his presentation, he shared his experiences and hypotheses regarding adaptive human and robotic locomotion, which could pave the way for creating effective assistive devices for human movement. He also introduce a new in-sole sensor developed in his laboratory, designed to collect extensive data for analyzing human locomotion.

Koh Hosoda earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Kyoto University, Japan, in 1993. He served as an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Osaka University from 1993 to 1997. From 1997 to 2010, he was an Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Engineering at Osaka University. He also held a Guest Professor position at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the University of Zurich from April 1998 to March 1999. He led the JST Asada ERATO Project as Group Leader from 2005 to 2010. He was a Professor at the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology from 2010 to 2014 and at the Graduate School of Engineering Science from 2014 to 2023, both at Osaka University. Since 2023, he has been an Emeritus Professor at Osaka University. Currently, he is a Professor at the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University.
