Active research data management

Active research data management refers to measures that are (or should be) taken to manage research data already during the research process. These include, for example, activities for filing, documenting or securing research data.

Efficient active research data management aims to carry out those activities in a way that minimises the required workload but already yields maximum benefit during the research project. This is achieved by exploiting synergy effects and options for automation. For example, by extracting information from output files of devices, the documentation of research data can be generated automatically and in a consistent form. Such standardised documentation (see metadata ) further offers a variety of possibilities for facilitating work steps. For example, the retrieval of stored research data can be significantly simplified using controlled search terms. Similarly, analysis programmes can automatically extract required information from the metadata.
