The M.Sc. in Computer Science is compatible with Anglo-Saxon degrees with the same name and is particularly well-suited for prospective international students. Students can choose their major to be either Data Science and Engineering, Distributed Computing or Visual Computing. Who is the Master's program aimed at? Vice Chairperson of Academic Affairs Jan Peters on the special features of the program.

Why an M.Sc. program in Computer Science? Who is the programme aimed at?

Experts in sub-areas of computer science are in high demand on the labour market! Therefore, computer science degree programs have become necessary that enable students to specialise more strongly in topics that are particularly needed. The M.Sc. program in Computer Science trains future experts in important specialisations such as Data Science & Engineering, Visual Computing, and Complex Networked Systems. It is therefore aimed at students who want to become recognised specialists on of these topics and are more likely to pursue an international career.

What distinguishes the M.Sc. program in Computer Science from the German M.Sc. program in Informatics?

The classic German M.Sc. program in Informatics is a degree for computer science generalists who have studied all aspects of computer science at depth. Therefore, it offers both a wide range of opportunities for studying both computer science theory and practical application. Such versatile generalists naturally remain in high demand on the German labour market.

On the other hand, the M.Sc. program Computer Science rather resembles the more structured American M.Sc. programs in Computer Science. A limited choice of majors -- called specialisations -- ensures that graduates acquire an almost unassailable lead in the chosen sub-fields of computer science. Through this specialist training, graduates are groomed to become internationally recognised and sought-after experts in their respective major.

What can students expect?

Students are quickly introduced to their specialisation through suitable catalogues of courses and penetrate this subject matter in great depth. The elective catalogues belonging to the specialisation help just as much as the participation in research by recognised experts teaching on these topics.

In which areas can graduates work later?

Through a specialised degree programme instructed in English, graduates are optimally prepared for a career in large international corporations, specialised computer science companies and academic research.
