In a three-week project design course from February 12 to 29, Chemistry students from TU Darmstadt and students of Provadis Hochschule Frankfurt worked together with US-American students from the partner universities South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to design an optimized High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) production facility.

The program was organized in cooperation with the company LyondellBasell. Over two weeks the 74 students worked on topics like the description of mass balance, polymerization kinetics, material separation, heat integration, cost estimation and safety. During the third week the students had the opportunity to visit the company site in Wesseling as part of an excursion.

This design project is offered every winter by the Department of Chemistry by the chairs of Technical Chemistry. This year Prof. Dr. Markus Busch and his group organized the course. For more information, read their article here.
