Structure-property relationships of iron particles and its oxides

The main goal of this project is the determination of tailor-made properties of iron particles during oxidation and reduction. It is intended to study the effect of oxidation and reduction on particle scale depending on particle size distribution, degree of agglomeration, inner and outer pore structure etc.. Besides it is planned to identify the residual oxide content after reduction and the residual iron after oxidation.

Based on X-ray scattering methods (SAXS/WAXS) it is planned to identify nanoscale (pores, oxide layers, fractal dimensions) and crystalline (iron and iron oxide phases) structures. For higher X-ray energies, synchrotron radiation for the determination of intrinsic kinetics at KARA (KIT, Campus North, Institute for Photon Science and Synchrotron Radiation) will be used.

The proposed techniques will allow to characterize the particle properties for the reduction and oxidation process which will help to identify tailor-made particle structures in collaboration with other groups of the consortia. To gain more information about the process of reduction and oxidation in the reactor system, a development of a reactor concept that is accessible for X-rays is planned. The results are intended, among others, to be used for simulation.

Research questions:

  • Is it possible to determine tailor-made particle properties for optimized process conditions for the reduction/oxidation cycle?
  • Can those particle properties be transferred to a pilot plant process?
  • Is it possible to describe a structure-property relationship for a high degree of energy efficiency?
  • Will we succeed to deliver validation data for simulation where the advanced properties are included?
