Inter- and transnational governance initiatives for clean energy

The project aims to assess work streams of all international and transnational governance initiatives in order to assess what role the technologies for energy carriers play in these and how energy storage relates to other work streams, for example, on energy infrastructure.

Since 2009 there as been a growth in international and transnational governance initiatives concentrating on the promotion of clean energy technologies. The best-known ones among these initiatives are the Clean Energy Ministerial and the Mission Innovation. The initiatives operate different work streams which comprise themes as different as clean power generation to empowering society to facilitate clean energy transition. This subproject aims to assess the work streams of all pertinent international and transnational governance initiatives in order to assess what role the technologies for energy carriers play in these and how energy storage relates to other work streams, for example, on energy infrastructure. Its perspective goes beyond iron as an energy carrier given that it is a new technology but also because it appears analytically rewarding to develop an understanding of which storage technologies have been discussed at the inter- and transnational level.

The analysis will build on the PI’s existing expertise on international and transnational governance initiatives for clean energy transition. However, it will yield insights beyond existing research by paying attention to issue advocacy within such initiatives, which has received scant attention in the literature so far.

Research questions

  • Which initiatives have focused on energy carriers?
  • Who has launched these initiatives? Who follows these initiatives?
  • Which other work streams do the supporters of energy carriers follow? Can we observe coupling profiles in the participation patterns?
  • What are the outcomes of work streams on energy carrier?
