Direct Track students interviewed (2/4)

Maira Gauges, Computational Engineering

2023/08/27

The Clean Circles Direct Track Programme is aimed at female Bachelor students who would like to do a doctorate on topics in the field of energy research or energy transition. During a two-year Master's phase, they are supported by mentors and prepared for the doctoral phase in the Clean Circles project. Here we introduce some of the students.

Maira Gauges

Subject: Computational Engineering
Entry into programme: April 2023
Mentor: Prof. Christian Hasse

Dear Maira, you are studying Computational Engineering in the 1st (Master) semester, how did that come about?

I already did my bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering here in Darmstadt. During that time I noticed that I enjoy programming just as much as the classical mechanical engineering subjects. My interest in simulations was awakened, so I decided to study computational engineering in the master's program.

Which research projects or specializations in computational engineering are you particularly interested in and why?

In particular, my interest was sparked in the modeling of flow and combustion. Working at the Institute for Simulation of Reactive Thermo-Fluid Systems (STFS) has already given me some insights in this field. I believe that there are many applications in different areas and it is also a very relevant field for the future.

How did you get involved in the Direct Track program? Why did you apply for it?

While I was writing my bachelor thesis at STFS, my supervisor asked me if I would be interested in the Direct-Track program. While writing my thesis I realized that I would enjoy doing scientific work in this environment, so I decided to apply. I believe that it is a good opportunity to be prepared for a doctorate and that the support of a mentor is very valuable. I also find the topic of Clean Circles very exciting and look forward to contributing to it.

Maira Gauges,
Direct-Track student since April 2023

Since I am just at the beginning of my Master's degree, I feel that there are endless possibilities how I could organize my studies. Therefore, I find it very helpful to have a contact person with a lot of experience.

You have been with us for two months now. Are there any particular highlights or lessons learned?

I have not been with the project for long, but I find it valuable to have the opportunity to work at an institute that is part of the Clean Circles project. I think this is the best way to learn and gain experience. Also, one of my highlights is that I have the opportunity to meet with my mentor and ask some questions. Since I am just at the beginning of my Master's degree, I feel that there are endless possibilities how I could organize my studies. Therefore, I find it very helpful to have a contact person with a lot of experience.

What do you expect from the Direct Track program in the future?

On the one hand, I hope to gain further insights into research through the program. On the other hand, I like the idea that the program unites students from different fields in one project. I hope that this will also lead to contact between us female students and an exchange between different areas.

Maira, thank you very much for this interview.
