Spacecraft on unexpected mission

Prof. Knodt and Prof. Hasse present the Clean Circles collaborative project at the opening of the Wissenschaftsschloss

What would a spacecraft have to report from its flight to Mars? For example, that our Earth is getting warmer and warmer, rivers are drying up and centuries-old forests are burning. With our children's science show we gave children an exciting and entertaining first understanding of carbon emissions and research results that can help our world.

In an interview with “Rocket” the spacecraft and together with the children's reporter Gisella, the Clean Circles project group of the TU Darmstadt illustrated the effects of climate change and, more specifically, of too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to the young audience in a child-friendly way. The TU scientists collected many good ideas from the children on how to counteract this and then presented their Clean Circles approach and the possibility of using iron to store energy.

Many renewable energies, such as those from the sun and wind, are not available in sufficient quantities in Germany to cover all our energy needs. In other countries, on the other hand, there is a lot of it. The task now is to transport the energy from these countries to Germany. Iron is particularly suitable for this. If you then burn it, the energy is released and made usable. Unlike burning coal, however, this process produces much less carbon dioxide. The young visitors were able to see this for themselves when iron wool was burnt on stage and very little carbon dioxide was emitted.
