On 24 July 2023, the second Mini-Symposium of the Research Area Thermodynamic-mathematical Analysis took place. The program featured an insightful talk from Dr. Peter Viebahn and Alexander Jülich, members of the “Sectors and Technologies” research unit at the Wuppertal Institute. Additionally, two presentations from young researchers reflected current advances within the Research Area 2.

Wenn Wasserstoff der Champagner der Energiewende ist, ist Eisen das täglich Brot?
Vortrag der Ringvorlesung „Was steckt dahinter?“
Die Energiewende ist aus der öffentlichen Debatte nicht mehr wegzudenken. Grüner Wasserstoff gilt als zentraler Baustein etwa für Anwendungen in der chemischen Energie oder für Flugzeugantriebe. Doch wie kann künftig die große Menge elektrischer Energie bereitgestellt werden, die aktuell noch in Kohlekraftwerken erzeugt wird? Hier bietet sich Eisen an. Das Metall kann als chemischer Energiespeicher in bestehenden Infrastrukturen genutzt werden und fossile Energieträger ersetzen. Im Vortrag wird das Potenzial einer eisenbasierten Kreislaufwirtschaft aufgezeigt und die Komplementarität von Eisen und Wasserstoff als Energieträger diskutiert.

Sustainable and Resilient Energy for Europe?!
From 6 to 8 December 2022, the international Winter School Energy Science and Engineering will take place in Darmstadt. Under the title “Sustainable and Resilient Energy for Europe?”, 12 experts will present their views on scientific and technical aspects of the production and use of carbon-free and sustainable storage systems as well as socio-economic aspects. Participants will gain a unique insight into current challenges and solutions in an energy landscape that is changing daily.

Bestandteile sind Trainer-Input, Reflexionsübungen in Einzelarbeit und in Kleingruppen, Diskussion und Erfahrungsaustausch im Plenum und der Einsatz von erlebnisorientierten Methoden.

Green iron making by hydrogen-based reduction of iron oxides
Talk by Prof. Dierk Raabe, Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung (MPIE)
On 28 June 2022 at 16:00, Prof. Dierk Raabe (Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung) will give a lecture on hydrogen-based reduction of iron oxides. The process is particularly relevant for the steel industry, which needs to curb its carbon emissions. The lecture is entitled “Green iron making by hydrogen-based reduction of iron oxides” and will be held online.

On 6 June 2022 Prof. W. Fichtner will give a talk entitled “Analysen zu gesicherter Leistung unter Einsatz europäischer Energiesystemmodelle”. Prof. Fichtner heads the Institute for Industrial Production (IIP) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

Minisymposium on Research Area 3 (Thermodynamic-mathematical Analysis)

We cordially invite you to the 2nd Clean Circles Mini-Symposium on 30 May 2022. The meeting will be held at 2:00 p. m. via Zoom. The symposium will feature one talk by a distinguished scientist in the field of thermodynamics and energy storage. It will be followed by two talks on recent advances in the thermoeconomic assessment of iron and the modeling and optimization of logistic networks within Clean Circles (PIs Stephan and Pfetsch). The duration of the symposium is approximately 2 hours, a detailed agenda is provided below. Each part will comprise a presentation followed by a short discussion.
