My field of research is fascinating. To laymen I would explain it in the following comprehensible manner:
We try to obtain a molecular level understanding of the physical properties of polymers. In particular we have been focusing on the behavior and properties of polymer nanocomposites, which are a new class of compounds with applications in many areas of science and technology. Compared to neat polymers, polymer nanocomposites exhibit a significant increase in mechanical, thermal stability, and flame retardancy. An area of considerable interest to us is to understand how the presence of a surface affects the structure and dynamics of polymers. Our methods of study cover different time and length scales, ranging from atomistic simulation to development and application of coarse-grained models, enabling one to simulate long-chains of polymers.
