Questionnaire to the Research Fellow

My field of research is fascinating. To laymen I would explain it in the following comprehensible manner:

Turbulent jets are encountered in a variety of engineering applications. A turbulent jet is also a basic building block flow that is of considerable theoretical interest, and closely linked to study of turbulence. As will become evident, there remain some significant gaps in our understanding of turbulent jets, which we believe can only be filled by judicious interplay between theory and simulation.

Problem Definition and Objectives: The merit of the classical theory of turbulence (K41) is the formulation of a theory for the case of an arbitrary turbulent flow with sufficiently large Reynolds number by introducing hypotheses of local homogeneity, local isotropy, and local stationarity. However, these assumptions fall within the structure of a turbulent jet. We plan to recover the shortcoming of the classical theory for a turbulent plane jet by theoretical and numerical studies. Characterization of the small-scale motions in turbulent flows has been one of the challenging problems of turbulence research, especially in a turbulent jet. We use direct numerical simulations (DNS) to simulate small-scale motions in a turbulent plane jet and investigate open questions. The focus of this research is on turbulence characteristics in a turbulent plane jet, studies of which can be divided in two categories: theoretical and numerical studies.

Theoretical studies aims at developing tractable mathematical models that can accurately predict properties of turbulent flows. In this research, we will be using and developing different theoretical frameworks to study turbulence such as Lie group theory for one and two-points equations of motion for a plane jet. Numerical studies aim to provide qualitative and quantitative information about a particular flow. We will be studying a turbulent plane jet using direct numerical simulation (DNS).

I’ve chosen the TU Darmstadt because…

I have mainly chosen TU Darmstadt because I can collaborate with Prof. Oberlack and his research group. I was aware of his reputation and his great work in turbulence field, so I have contacted him. I wrote my proposal with Prof. Oberlack for Alexander von Humboldt foundation based on our mutual interests, which has been accepted. I would like to note that my final goal is being a professor who is eligible to lead students to the world and perform novel researches. To meet requirements for being a professor, I should be prepared with leadership, passion for research and sociable character as well as academic knowledge. Research staying in Germany and working with Prof. Oberlack would bring me more various opportunities like adapting myself to a new environment and pursuing intellectual research with world‐renowned faculty.

Questionnaire for the host

Guest of: Prof. Dr. Martin Oberlack

Department: Department of Mechanical Engineering

You appreciate in your guest: Hamed impressed me by the incredible speed and scientific focus on how the proposal for Alexander von Humboldt foundation was developed and nicely amalgamated his scientific experience, with the one from our group, which apparently led to a new direction in turbulence research.

You, your team and the TU Darmstadt benefit from your guest’s… experience in turbulence and statistical turbulence theory, which, based on modern methods, allows to compare and validate important theories of turbulence and unifies ideas from different directions.
