Area of research: from high-pressure synthesis to properties of functional materials

Name of my Research Institute:
State Key Laboratory of Metastable Materials Science and Technology, Yanshan University, China

Research period at the TU Darmstadt: January 2018 to December 2019 (AvH Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers)

My field of research is fascinating…

Pressure is a fundamental thermodynamic variable that can be used to alter the atomic structures and properties of materials through reducing interatomic distances and modifying electronic orbitals and bonding patterns. Therefore, pressure is a useful tool for creating exotic materials not available at ambient conditions. My research interest is devoted to high-pressure synthesis of novel ceramic materials with versatile properties including tunable wide band gap, high- or super-hardness, high elasticity, and high strength for LEDs, abrasives, and aerospace shields.

My most important success in research to date is…

to synthesis different novel carbon materials through adjusting the hybridization states and bonding patterns of carbon atoms under different high pressure and high temperature conditions. And to receive the Humboldt fellowship (2018-2019) at TU Darmstadt in recognition of my research studies.

I’ve chosen the TU Darmstadt …

due to the high level expertise of Prof. Dr. Riedel and his research group in the field of high pressure synthesis of novel materials. Prof. Dr. Riedel has worked on ceramics for decades and systematically studied the mechanical, electronic, and optical properties of Si-based ceramics. Besides that the fundamental support such as experimental equipments, the serious and responsible scientific attitude of Prof. Dr Riedel will significantly advance my future scientific profile.

I highly appreciate… Dr. Meng Hu´s research studies related to novel carbon allotropes formed in high temperature and high pressure environments. Her fundamental work is innovative and of excellent scientific quality. In particular, I respect her interest to work on deep basic research related to the understanding of materials synthesis and phase relations under extreme temperature and pressure conditions.

Our team and the TU Darmstadt benefit from… Dr. Meng Hu´s research studies. It will strengthen and extend our studies with the focus on the synthesis of novel high pressure materials with extraordinary properties far beyond that of the existing materials. With this research topic, the TU Darmstadt is one of the few research institutions worldwide with long term expertise in ultra-high pressure materials synthesis. Since 2002, the Institute Dispersive Solids organizes a biannual international workshop devoted to high pressure materials in Rüdesheim/Rhine river.
