My field of research is fascinating. To laymen I would explain it in the following comprehensible manner:
NMR spectroscopy is a great but rather insensitive experimental technique which allows characterizing materials at a molecular level. Therefore Dynamic Nuclear Polarization technique which transfers high electron spin polarization to the nuclei of interest and boosts the spectral sensitivity is the method of choice. Tailoring this technique for analyzing highly diluted technologically important catalytic systems as well as the systems of the biological relevance allows obtaining information about their nature which was previously inaccessible.
