Extensive experimental research infrastructures are available at the TU for addressing research questions in engineering and natural sciences. The experimental research infrastructures are often grouped together spatially or organizationally in the form of so-called core facilities and are available to various users. Specialized research infrastructures & large scale instrumentation complement the core facilities. They are often only used by a limited number of scientists.

Core Facilities

At TU Darmstadt, various individual devices are grouped together spatially and organizationally in so-called core facilities. The devices in a core facility are available for use by various scientists and, where applicable, external partners. In addition to device access, a core facility often also offers methodological expertise for the targeted use of the devices or provides scientific services.

Competence Centre for Materials Characterisation

The Competence Centre for Materials Characterisation within the Institute of Materials Science offers a great variety of analytical and structure investigation services. In the frame of a strong cooperation with the Materials Testing Laboratory Darmstadt (Staatliche Materialprüfungsanstalt, MPA) and the Fraunhofer-Institute for Durability and System Reliability (LBF) additional methods for characterizing different materials can be implemented.

The “Mass Spec” Core Facility of the Department of Chemistry offers mass spectrometry services for all research groups of the Technical University of Darmstadt and external clients. Our analysis covers a broad spectrum of compounds in terms of molecular masses and polarities.

Bio Imaging Center (TUBIC)

The faculty of Biology at TU Darmstadt has been operating a center for light microscopy since 2009. The center comprises three central and 12 decentralised light microscopes and associated devices. The spectrum includes wide-field, fluorescence, confocal laser scanning, spinning disc, high-throughput, super-resolution and light sheet microscopes. Live cell chambers are available to allow defined environmental conditions.

The Additive Manufacturing Center offers infrastructure for all steps in the additive manufacturing process, from powder production to printing (including two laser powder bed fusion printers and a free-forming printer) and post-processing to analysis.

The High-Resolution Center for Electron Microscopy offers methods for structural and chemical characterization with a focus on inorganic solids using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Its expertise includes conventional imaging, chemical characterization using energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), as well as in-situ methods and state-of-the-art scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) at the atomic level.

The ETIT clean room facilities provide processing technology for structuring and processing of semiconductors, dielectrics and other materials. The technological capabilities allow for processing microfluidic devices, microwave and Terahertz as well as optical components such as Bragg mirrors, amongst others.

The superconducting Darmstadt electron linear accelerator (S-DALINAC)

The superconducting Darmstadt electron linear accelerator (S-DALINAC) has been part of the large-scale research infrastructure at TU Darmstadt and the Institute for Nuclear Physics since 1991 and enables highly precise measurements to be completed. The facility was and remains a key research tool for various collaborative projects funded by the DFG. The accelerator is undergoing continuous development.

This includes mechanical and technological testing facilities, metallography, microscopy, and computed tomography.
