How to apply for the international PhD program in Life Science Engineering

Admission & Application Requirements

Application track I: Central Call

The Graduate School Life Science Engineering (GS LSE) conducts an annual central recruitment for multiple PhD positions. Unless stated otherwise, these positions are funded by the respective research group leaders.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • An excellent M.Sc. degree in life sciences or engineering disciplines, obtained no more than 6 years ago
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Excellent proficiency in written and spoken English
  • A passion for interdisciplinary research and the ability to work independently and collaboratively

📌 If you are completing your master’s degree after the application deadline, you may still apply. In this case, please upload a copy of your Bachelor’s degree.

How to apply:

Submit your application exclusively via the online application form. Emails will not be accepted.

Please provide the following documents for a successful application: CV, motivation letter, Bachelor's and Master's certificates plus transcript of records, at least two reference contacts and a proof of English language certificate.

Selection process:

  1. Applications are reviewed by the project leader and the GS LSE assessment committee.
  2. All applicants will be informed via email about their evaluation status.
  3. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview (virtual or in-person).
  4. Selected candidates will receive information about their supervisor and research group via email shortly after the interviews.

Application track II: Open position

This track allows applicants to apply for individual PhD vacancies outside the central call. You may:

  • Apply directly for open PhD positions throughout the year.
  • Submit your application via email to the Managing Director
  • If you have already secured a position at TU Darmstadt that aligns with GS LSE’s research focus, you may request to join the Graduate School. Please contact Dr. Julia Detzer for details.

General Information

📌 Final Acceptance & Enrollment

After acceptance into the program, you must:

  1. Complete the electronic application at TU Darmstadt.
  2. Obtain final approval of your documents.
  3. Receive acceptance from the PhD committee of the department of the research field of choice..

The Managing Director will guide you through the administrative process and answer any questions you may have.
