How to apply for the international PhD program in Life Science Engineering

Admission and application requirements

The Graduate School Life Science Engineering announces a central recruitment for several PhD positions once a year. Please follow Application Track I for details on the recruitment process.

For individual PhD vacancies offered outside the central call, please follow the Application track II.

If not stated otherwise, PhD positions are funded by the individual research group leaders.

To apply for the Graduate school LSE, applicants must be doctoral candidates thus not be in possession of a doctoral degree and hold an excellent M.Sc. with a strong background in life science or engineering disciplines:

  • Computer Science
  • Micro- and Nanotechnology

Applicants who receive their master's degree after the application deadline may also apply for the program. In this case, please upload a copy of your Bachelor's degree.

Please note, applications are exclusively accepted via our homepage. Here you are asked to upload your CV, a motivation statement, transcript and degree documents (Bachelor and Master), proof of English language and at least two letters of recommendations. Please provide each document as pdf.

Application track I (Joint Call) – OPEN

The central call for the HORIZON-EUROPE MSCA-COFUND doctoral program has started on November 15, 2023. Application deadline is January 15, 2024. Please find more information about the program here.

Application track II (open positions)

Applicants are allowed to apply directly for open positions and join the Graduate School LSE throughout the year.

Please use the online application form to submit your application.

Students who already found a position at the TU Darmstadt that fits into the research profile of the GS LSE may also join the GS LSE. Please contact the managing director

Selection process

Applications are reviewed by the respective project leader and the management board of the Graduate School. In case of further consideration, depending on the number of applicants, availability and distance, an interview will be conducted in person or online.

Accepted applicants via Track II are welcome to join the annual on-boarding event of the Graduate School LSE, as well.

After final acceptance in our program (only then), you require electronic application at our university, a final approval of your documents and acceptance of the PhD committee of the department of the research field of choice. The managing director will support you throughout the whole administrative process and answers all your questions.
