The Kunstforum der TU Darmstadt is expanding its educational program. Since summer 2024, we will be presenting our new traveling studio. If you would like to book us exclusively, we will be happy to make you an offer.

With its traveling studio, the Kunstforum der TU Darmstadt invites everyone to (re)discover free painting. Painting increases concentration, has a calming effect and stimulates feelings of happiness. It strengthens the personality and also social behavior.

In free painting, we let ourselves be inspired by the many bright colors that we only need to use. We paint spontaneously and intuitively, playing with colors and shapes, everyone stays with themselves and their own paper. It is about the process of creative activity and not about achieving the most perfect result possible.

For free painting and guided painting

Free painting and accompanied painting are inspired by Arno Stern (*1924, Kassel, lives in Paris) and his idea of the “painting place”, an institution that now exists all over the world. Adults and children paint there in a self-determined way, without pressure or judgment. “The desire to paint rests in every person,” writes Arno Stern in his book “The Painting Game and the Natural Trace”. Arno Stern discovered the healing effect of free painting rather by chance when he worked in a home for war orphans in a Paris suburb in 1946, where he was supposed to keep the children occupied. He let them paint, set up a studio and created the “Malort”, a protected space where children and later adults could paint in a playful way.

In the 1950s, he expanded his work and set up a studio in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district of Paris in the 6th arrondissement for children, and later also for adults.

Accompanied painting does not require any artistic skills or knowledge of special techniques, as the emphasis is on experiencing the painting process and less on the goal of achieving a finished, perfect picture.
