TU Darmstadt Hosts Panel on Transatlantic Relations and Global Order

Joint seminar for students from San Antonio and Darmstadt

2024/07/24

Global orders and disorders were in the focus of a panel discussion hosted by TU Darmstadt as part of a joint seminar with the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). The event was organized by professors Markus Lederer (TU Darmstadt) and Matthias Hofferberth (UTSA). The panel featured Acting Principal Officer Jennifer DeWitt Walsh (U.S. Consulate General Frankfurt), Ron Nirenberg (Mayor of San Antonio), and Tanja Brühl (President of TU Darmstadt).

The discussion focused on the current status of transatlantic relations and future challenges for global order. Panelists highlighted the importance of the transatlantic partnership as a key principle of global order, noting its complexity and the need for active engagement at various levels. They also advocated for a global order that is fairer and more open to change.

The event concluded with a commitment to fostering fairness and adaptability in global governance, underscoring the strength of the TU Darmstadt-UTSA partnership in promoting international dialogue.

The discussion took place as part of the seminar “Global (Dis)Order” which explored current discussions on global (dis)orders and the potential end of the liberal international world order. It examined concepts like anarchy, balancing, hegemony, and contestation, applying these to analyse contemporary global political issues. The seminar included students both from UTSA and TU Darmstadt, allowing for intense US-German debates on world order.

Partnership with the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA)

The partnership between TU Darmstadt and UTSA was established alongside the city partnership between Darmstadt and San Antonio and is now thriving on all levels, including student exchanges, joint courses, and research internships. Collaborations span topics such as cybersecurity, environmental analysis, hydrology, and political science, supported by city-level cooperation and initiatives.

Exchanges have also taken place at the university management level. In 2017, a delegation from TU Darmstadt visited San Antonio, and in May 2023, UTSA president Taylor Eighmy visited Darmstadt, accompanied by former U.S. Consul General in Frankfurt, Norman Thatcher Scharpf. This partnership exemplifies successful international academic collaboration and the importance of scientific cooperation and student exchange in strengthening German-American ties.
