New LOEWE Start professorship at the University of Gießen
2024/11/29
Perception researcher Dr Katharina Dobs has been awarded a LOEWE start professorship at the Justus Liebig University of Gießen. Around 1.9 million euros in LOEWE funding will be provided over a total of six years for her research in applied computer science with a focus on cognitive systems. This will also help Hesse to strengthen the full proposal for the ‘The Adaptive Mind’ research network, in which the Technical University of Darmstadt is also involved, for the Excellence Strategy of the federal and state governments.
One focus of Dobs' work is functional specialisation in the human brain. This phenomenon describes the tendency of certain brain regions to take over visual processes such as face recognition. In her research, she and her team combine neuroscientific imaging techniques with artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. They want to decode the neuronal processes underlying human visual perception. They are also investigating the adaptability of the human visual system to natural environments. The aim is to expand our scientific understanding of human perception, action and thought. In addition, the findings should contribute to the development of more adaptable and powerful AI models. With her innovative research approaches, Dobs enriches the work in the proposed Cluster of Excellence ‘The Adaptive Mind’.
The on the adaptability of the human mind is submitting a full application for the Cluster of Excellence funding line as part of the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments. TU Darmstadt, Justus Liebig University Giessen and Philipps University Marburg are involved. TAM project
TU Darmstadt is represented in the with a total of three project outlines. In addition to TAM from the field of cognitive sciences, these are “Reasonable Artificial Intelligence” (RAI) on artificial intelligence and “CoM2Life” on communicating biomaterials. Excellence Strategy competition
