Sustainable energy saving: TU Darmstadt once again draws a positive conclusion
2025/05/08
Last winter, TU Darmstadt once again succeeded in stabilizing its energy consumption at a reduced level. Compared to the baseline period before the energy price crisis in 2022, all members of TU collectively saved around 17% heat in the 2024/25 heating period, adjusted for weather conditions. Electricity consumption fell by almost four percent compared to the baseline period.

In absolute terms, the university's heat consumption fell by around 23% in the past winter compared to the base period and was around 8% higher than in the previous year. The main reason for this was a lower average outside temperature: this was around 1.2 degrees Celsius lower in the most recent heating period than in the winter of 2023/24. Absolute electricity consumption in the current heating period exceeded that of the previous year by more than one percent.
“For the third winter in a row, our energy savings record is extremely pleasing – even without strict specifications for maintaining room temperatures,” explained TU Chancellor Martin Lommel. “We can all be proud of this together. We would like to thank all members of our university for their contribution! Together, we are on the right track when it comes to climate protection and we want to continue on this path.”
