TU Darmstadt has developed strategic partnerships with a number of selected partner universities. These partnerships were developed over many years and are characterized by equitable, reliable and close cooperation. A strategic partnership covers several department and all levels (students, scholars, administration and management) at the cooperating universities. Thus, this institutional framework provides a broad and robust basis for long-term projects and new, joint activities.
Technische Universität Darmstadt and Tongji University in Shanghai signed their cooperation agreement as early as 1980 and agreed to collaborate closely in terms of research and teaching. The initially selective cooperation has grown into a broad and trusting partnership with regular meetings and consultations and a great number of joint projects.

TU Darmstadt and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (short: Virginia Tech), located in Blacksburg, Virginia, signed a cooperation agreement for a strategic partnership in 2016. The signing of the contract marks a milestone in the partnership between TU Darmstadt and Virginia Tech, initiated in 2000. The cooperation comprises many departments of TU Darmstadt and includes all levels of a scientific career – students, junior researchers and professors.
The partnership between the two universities will be intensified by the opening of a liaison office on 21.02.2019. The Liaison Office for the USA and Canada will be headed by Philina Wittke. In addition to establishing and maintaining contacts with local universities and faculties and implementing and designing research and student exchange programmes, it will support the establishment of research cooperation and the development of common teaching formats. Further tasks in the liaison office are the preparation and support of delegation, research and study trips, information work on German-American university cooperations and workshops and seminars on studying in Germany and intercultural competences.
