International MeCRE Conference
13–15 November 2024

The second conference on the Metal-enabled Cycle of Renewable Energy (MeCRE) was held in Darmstadt, Germany, from 13–15 November 2024. The event is a forum to exchange on metals as innovative energy carriers in a renewable energy system.

The 2nd MeCRE Conference focused on, but was not limited to iron as an energy carrier. Both fundamental and application-oriented research from academia and industry were discussed. The 2nd MeCRE Conference was organized by Clean Circles in collaboration with the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). The organising team would like to thank all participants for their time, enthusiasm and contributions!

The 2nd MeCRE conference will be covered in the Special Issue Metal-enabled Cycle of Renewable Energy in Fuel. Submissions close on 28 February 2025.

The 3rd International MeCRE Conference (ReMeF Symposium), organized by Project Reveal, will take place on 12–13 February 2025 in Rapperswil, Switzerland, and will focus on aluminum.

MeCRE Conference Introduction

The abundance of renewable energy sources on our planet is sufficient to solve the energy and climate crisis. What hinders our shift towards a renewable energy landscape is primarily the geographic scattering and intermittent nature of most renewable energy sources. Consequently, it becomes crucial to convert surplus green power into energy carriers that can be easily stored, transported, and reused. Several metals, such as iron, aluminum, and magnesium, have been proposed as promising candidates for the long-term storage and long-distance transport of renewable energy. These metals can undergo reactions, either with atmospheric oxygen to release heat or with water to generate heat and hydrogen. The resulting byproducts, metal oxides, can be infinitively recycled and transformed back into metals using renewable energy.

This conference represents the second international forum dedicated to the subject of Metal-enabled Cycle of Renewable Energy (MeCRE). It will bring together leading scientists and technologists in this emerging field to exchange innovative insights and devise groundbreaking solutions aimed at accelerating the transition to clean energy through MeCRE. If you have an interest in becoming a part of this exciting exploration, this conference serves as an excellent starting point.
