Call for Abstracts
2nd International MeCRE Conference

Participants are invited to present their research work in an oral or poster presentation. Please read the following abstract submission guidelines.

The second conference on the Metal-enabled Cycle of Renewable Energy (MeCRE) will take place in Darmstadt, Germany, on November 13-15, 2024. It will provide a forum to exchange on metals as innovative energy carriers in a renewable energy system providing heat and hydrogen. Both fundamental and application oriented research from academia and industry will be discussed.

The conference is organized by Clean Circles in collaboration with the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).

The main topics include, but are not limited to*:

  • metal oxidation in air and water
  • reduction of metal oxides
  • recyclability and safety aspects of metallic energy carriers
  • sustainability, energy system and political integration of metallic energy carriers
  • perspective on industrial applications and environments

It is our pleasure to invite you and your co-workers and students to present your research work in an oral or poster presentation. The deadline for abstract submission is July 1, 2024. Notification of acceptance will be given until August 1, 2024.

We intend to publish selected contributions in a special issue of a peer-reviewed journal.

Please submit an abstract including title, authors affiliation and the outline of maximum 600 words and two pages (including figures). The template is available here for download .

*The 2nd MeCRE conference focuses on – but is not limited to – iron.
The 3rd MeCRE workshop (ReMeF Symposium), organized by Project Reveal, will take place on February 12-13, 2025, in Rapperswil, Switzerland and will focus on aluminum.

MeCRE Conference Introduction

The abundance of renewable energy sources on our planet is sufficient to solve the energy and climate crisis. What hinders our shift towards a renewable energy landscape is primarily the geographic scattering and intermittent nature of most renewable energy sources. Consequently, it becomes crucial to convert surplus green power into energy carriers that can be easily stored, transported, and reused. Several metals, such as iron, aluminum, and magnesium, have been proposed as promising candidates for the long-term storage and long-distance transport of renewable energy. These metals can undergo reactions, either with atmospheric oxygen to release heat or with water to generate heat and hydrogen. The resulting byproducts, metal oxides, can be infinitively recycled and transformed back into metals using renewable energy.

This conference represents the second international forum dedicated to the subject of Metal-enabled Cycle of Renewable Energy (MeCRE). It will bring together leading scientists and technologists in this emerging field to exchange innovative insights and devise groundbreaking solutions aimed at accelerating the transition to clean energy through MeCRE. If you have an interest in becoming a part of this exciting exploration, this conference serves as an excellent starting point.
