Being a researcher in a multilingual world: What this means for me and my career (June 11th, 2025)

Young researchers today live in a multilingual world and use more than one language in their daily work routines. While English is important for publishing and conferences, many researchers have untapped potential in other languages. How can you use your entire language repertoire to shape your career?

In this workshop, you will reflect on your linguistic biography and explore how languages can benefit your academic work. After a brief introduction to language and multilingualism theories, you will discuss their role in the globalized academic landscape. By exchanging ideas and best practices, you will discover strategies for using your language repertoire in research, finding and dealing with literature, and academic writing. Finally, you will consider how your (future) language skills can influence your research and career development, and learn about support services at TU Darmstadt.

Learning objectives:

  • Reflection on the role(s) of languages for academia, universities, and your field of research
  • Reflection on the impact of multilingualism on your academic career
  • Strategies for maintaining and expanding the individual language repertoire
  • Strategies for utilizing the individual language repertoire for research, finding and dealing with literature, and academic writing
  • Familiarization with available support services at TU Darmstadt

Robin Breit (wird in neuem Tab geöffnet) studied Japanese Studies, German as a Foreign Language, and Political Science in Trier (Germany), Winter Park, FL (USA) and Tokyo (Japan). After graduating, he worked for six years at the Department of Intercultural Communication and Multilingualism Research with Language Learning Center at University of Bonn.

At TU Darmstadt, he coordinates the Languages Policy Implementation Team at the Language Resource Centre. He runs workshops on multilingualism, multilingual learning strategies and intercomprehension, and teaches German as a Foreign language.

Ute Henning (wird in neuem Tab geöffnet) studied German as a Second/Foreign Language, English Linguistics, and Phonetics in Jena. After her graduation, she went to Cluj-Napoca, Romania, where she was DAAD language assistent at Babeş-Bolyai-University. She joined TU Darmstadt for her doctorate as a research associate at the Institute for Linguistics and Literary Studies and received her PhD in 2019. Since 2018, Ute is employed at the Language Resource Center of TU Darmstadt. At SchreibCenter, she works as a writing tutor, and a writing trainer, and is head of SchreibCenter's English Language Section.
