Anna Lehmann-Brauns is the »Darmstadt City Photographer 2017«. She presents her view of the city under the motto THE VIEW FROM OUTSIDE. Photographic associations to the Cultural Center Darmstadt from February 4 to April 15, 2018, in the Kunstforum der TU Darmstadt.

In her photographic work, the Berlin artist Anna Lehmann-Brauns refuses a documentary »neutral« view. On the contrary, she shuts the places of her interest out of the environment, leaves aside the unimportant for them and focuses them consciously and decisively.

In her work, she also deals with found spaces as places of individual memory. The deserted pictures are both the strong light and the special color in common. Even though the places are deserted, they still show spaces of and for people. By working out her associations to a place, a detail, an interior and thus the subjective meaning of reality, a specific picture emerges – and in the case of the exhibition THE VIEW FROM OUTSIDE. Photographic Associations to the Cultural Center Darmstadt a very personal view of Darmstadt.

Kulturelle Mitte Darmstadt is an initiative of the agenda21 group Stadtgestalt and the Werkbundakademie Darmstadt. It deals with the function and significance of the open spaces in the city center and the design of the surroundings of the cultural institutions to be found there as well as the appearance of the commercial city center. A central concern is to assign the various squares and cultural locations their own identity and to determine their character, to emphasize their architectural and urban qualities more strongly and to link them together.

Follow in the footsteps of Darmstadt's cultural urbanity with your camera – this was the invitation and request made to Anna Lehmann-Brauns, 11th Darmstadt City Photographer, by the Werkbundakademie Darmstadt e.V..

For the 11th time, it awarded the »Darmstadt City Photographer« prize, endowed with EUR 3,000.00, and honored the Berlin photographer Anna Lehmann-Brauns with the award at a jury meeting at the end of November 2016. The jury members were: Photographer Franziska von Gagern, Munich, winner in 2003, photographer Prof. Michael Kerstgens, Oberhausen, professor at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, biologist and photographer Reinhold Fischenich DWB, Wiesbaden, former senior teacher, Julia Reichelt, Darmstadt, head of the Art Forum at TU Darmstadt, architect Andreas Löhr, 2nd chairman of the Werkbundakademie Darmstadt e.V.
