Get to know study traditions, exams, and campus essentials to make the most of your start at TU Darmstadt.

Now that the semester has started, you may be wondering how academic life here differs from your home country. We’re here to share some tips and useful information to help you know what to expect and how to navigate the study culture at TU Darmstadt.
1. Download the TUDa App
has everything you need for your studies in one place: your digital student ID (including library access and semester ticket), your student mailbox, Moodle access, and the latest university news. The TUDa app
2. Join in the lecture tradition
At the end of a lecture, it’s customary to knock on the desks instead of clapping. This is a way to thank and show appreciation to the lecturer.
3. Embrace independent learning
Students at TU Darmstadt are expected to take a proactive role in their studies. They are encouraged to explore their own interests and passions through self-directed study.
4. Be prepared for a different exam format
There are comparatively fewer exams throughout the semester. Most of them are usually held at the end of the semester and are very comprehensive. Be ready for intense exam preparation.
Memorize your matriculation number! Digital devices aren’t allowed during exams, so you can’t check it in the TUDa app. Note that this is different from your TU-ID, which is used for logging into online platforms like TUCaN and Moodle. It’s good to know both by heart, but don’t forget the uses!
The study culture in Germany offers a unique and enriching experience. While adjusting may be challenging at first, it’s worth embracing the adventure. Take advantage of opportunities to exchange ideas with fellow students, attend events, and explore the city of Darmstadt and its cultural offerings. We hope that these tips will help you settle into the study culture in Germany and make the most out of your time at TU Darmstadt.

Coming from the UK system, I was used to a rigid structure with regular tutor check-ins and limited course choices. At TU Darmstadt, the wide range of classes has given me the freedom to explore my interests and shape my own path.
