New Master's degree program in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

Start in winter semester 2023/24 / Online application possible until 15.7.

2023/06/05

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have started to become ubiquitous in their application to both daily life as well as many important societal tasks. The Department of Computer Science has expanded its course portfolio in AI and ML – previously integrated primarily in the computer science master's programme – to establish a new master's program in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AIM). What is special about the M.Sc. program at TU Darmstadt, what can students expect? Vice Chairperson of Academic Affairs Jan Peters about the new program.

To fully exploit the potential of AI, countless numbers of well-trained specialists will be needed worldwide in the coming decades.

What is special about the M.Sc. Program Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at TU Darmstadt?

The TU Darmstadt has acted very forward-thinking in the past: Long before artificial intelligence was on everyone's lips, it recruited a large number of highly renowned experts on all aspects of artificial intelligence! As a result, we were able to design a unique M.Sc. program that allows students to study artificial intelligence in its full breadth and at the same time become an expert in all important topics of machine learning in full depth.

In addition, the M.Sc. program ensures that its graduates are able to manage “Big Data”, i.e. extremely large amounts of data, for machine learning and are trained in software engineering specialized for developing AI systems.

Who is the M.Sc. program aimed at? What can students expect?

The M.Sc. program turns computer science Bachelor graduates into experts on all relevant aspects of artificial intelligence and machine learning. It covers the foundations of artificial intelligence, all important practical AI methods and AI models as well as essential AI knowledge on data management and knowledge on all important application areas of AI. These AI domains include computer vision, natural language processing, and AI-based robotics, as well as AI methods from reasoning, planning, learning, and all aspects of machine learning from statistical learning, deep learning, unsupervised learning, relational learning to reinforcement learning.

How future-proof is the topic? Can AI become just a fad?

Very safe and future-proof! AI is currently the fastest growing future industry in the world with an exponentially growing number of practical applications. Companies like Google, Facebook/Meta, Amazon, Netflix have almost completely turned into AI companies. The need for AI-savvy computer scientists in the IT industry is currently considered the biggest obstacle to growth in the global economy. I would expect graduates of this AI M.Sc. program to be able to get off the plane in any city in the world and be offered high quality, high paying jobs within days!

Master's program in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (Language of Instruction: English)

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have started to become ubiquitous in their application to both daily life (e.g., spam filtering, Google search, image processing in digital cameras, automatic translation by DeepL, ChatGPT) as well as many important societal tasks e.g. in energy management, medical diagnosis, agriculture or disaster control. In order to be able to fully exploit this potential, well-trained specialists for these exciting tasks are in high demand worldwide and will remain so in coming decades.

The Department of Computer Science at TU Darmstadt has therefore expanded its course portfolio in AI and ML -- previously integrated primarily in the computer science master's programme – to establish a new master's program in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AIM) with English as language of instruction. Students can select courses from an exceptionally broad and extraordinarily deep, practice-oriented course portfolio. This wide range of learning opportunities enables them to set their individual focus within AI and ML.
