Heating for TU buildings – and more

Facts and figures on the university's own district heating network

2024/04/17

A total of 102 TU Darmstadt properties on the city center campus, Botanischer Garten, Lichtwiese and the university stadium are connected to the TU's own district heating network.

This supplies other state properties, including the Justice Center, the Regional Council, the Hessian State Museum, the State Archives and the Tax Office. The TU's energy supplier and service provider, Entega Iqony Wärme GmbH, also supplies – contractually and for a limited period – its own heating customers such as the properties Justus-Liebig-Haus, Alice-Eleonoren-Schule, Jugendstilbad, Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium, Georg-Büchner-Schule, Altes Pädagog, Stadion am Böllenfalltor, Darmstadtium, Welcome Hotel and others.

The energy center operated by Entega Iqony at the Lichtwiese site uses four combined heat and power plants and hot water boilers. Around 50 percent of the TU's heating requirements are covered by the combined heat and power plants, ten percent by the boilers and 40 percent by purchasing district heating from the Entega Darmstadt-Nord district heating network.
