2024/03/22

As a student of TU Darmstadt, you will definitely be spending a lot of time with the very important system that is TUCaN. Even as someone just applying to the university, you’ve already had to use at least a little bit of it, but what exactly is TUCaN and what can you do with it? Why is it important for your studies and how can you learn more about it? These are valid questions you might be asking yourself and we’re here to help you answer them!

TUCaN is a system that will help your journey at TU Darmstadt.

What is TUCaN?

TUCaN is the central organization system for courses and examinations at TU Darmstadt. It’s a system used by students, lecturers, and also employees of the different departments who are entrusted with the management of courses, administration of student data, and room allocation. The system is meant to make it easier for lecturers to manage their courses and for students to plan their studies. With TUCaN, the administration profits from less paperwork, waiting times are shorter, and data only needs to be recorded once.

Why is it relevant to your studies?

You’ve read about the general use of it, but you must also be wondering in what scenarios you would have to use it as a student. Here are some of the most relevant uses of TUCaN that you will be required to utilize during your studies:

  • Registering for your modules, courses (lectures, exercises, and seminars), and exams: this is necessary and very important so that your lecturers can then later input your grades into the system. A benefit is that you’ll get an automatically generated schedule of your courses and exams which you can see from the website and the mobile app or export to another application.
  • Seeing your grades or your GPA: in TUCaN, you can see once your lecturer has inputted your grades. You can also see how you did on your course or test compared to your peers because you can also see details like the average grade of your class.
  • TUCaN Messages: these are important as it notifies you when you have successfully registered into a course or for an exam. A lot of important announcements from the university or from your department are also often sent through TUCaN, so it’s a good idea to adjust your settings so that the messages get forwarded to your student email. This way you won’t miss anything!
  • Getting important documents: you can also access and download documents that might be important to you like the achievement report (Leistungsspiegel) and certificate of study (Studienbescheinung). You are often required to bring copies of these documents for example to an appointment at the foreigner’s office.
  • Personal data: it’s also important to keep your personal data, like your address, up to date on TUCaN. Any important letters, like ones that might contain your Athena Card or your student ID card, will be delivered to your address in TUCaN.

You don’t need to install any applications or programs to use TUCaN. All you need is your TU-ID login information and a stable internet connection. It’s always accessible from various browsers as long as there’s no maintenance taking place. However, there is a helpful TUCaN App where you can check your messages, your schedule, your grades, and more! It’s important to note that registrations aren’t doable through the app!

How can you learn to use it?

There’s a whole page of tutorials and FAQs that you can visit to learn more about the various uses of TUCaN, but we would recommend using the video tutorials to first get a good overview of the website. From the videos you’ll learn about the interface of TUCaN, how to forward your TUCaN messages to your student email, how to register to your courses and exams, how to export your schedule, and more!

An important tip that always gets brought up is about registering for exams. Please be aware that once you’ve registered for a module or course, you’re not automatically registered for the exam. And there is a deadline for the registration period, so make sure you don’t miss it! You can also unregister from an exam, but make sure you read through the related rules before you do.

Now that you’ve learned the basics about TUCaN, we hope that you won’t have any issues with it during your studies. We wish you the best of luck for your upcoming semester!
