Meet the American Heiner

Unraveling History: The American Mastodon Exhibition

Explore the Hessian State Museum and delve into the fascinating history of the American mastodon. Since its discovery in the early 18th century, this creature has sparked discussions among European researchers, challenging perceptions of extinction and biblical narratives. The excavation of Peale's Mastodon in 1801 led to a groundbreaking exhibition in Philadelphia and the creation of the first mounted skeleton in the United States. President Jefferson championed the mastodon as a symbol in the debate against prevailing European beliefs about the fauna of the New World. Despite museum fires elsewhere, Peale’s Mastodon found its way to Darmstadt in 1854, eventually becoming a prized exhibit at the Hessian State Museum since 1906. Every year on September 26th, students, teachers and various institutions across Europe celebrate the European Day of Languages. This year, the TU Darmstadt and Unite! are joining the many European initiatives by offering various stands with information on languages and multilingualism, many activities, workshops, and an open-table language café where you can have conversations in several languages.
