Vice President, Research and Innovation

What I am working on…

My work concerns two interconnected areas: supporting excellent research and promoting innovation and start-ups.

The overall goal in the first area is to further increase the quality and visibility of research performed at TU Darmstadt in order to further enhance the institution's profile and boost its visibility within the international research community. The mechanisms to achieve this goal include the further development of the research profile of the university, maintaining the high-level of excellent research funding, increasing the publication record and its quality, and promoting early career researchers.

The focus research areas that constitute our profile are the nuclei of our research excellence and need to be further developed to become also the driving forces for internationalisation, innovation, research-oriented teaching formats and targeted promotion of early career researchers.

To be prepared for new challenges ahead, it is however also necessary to identify and develop new focus topics. Obtaining competitive third-party funding is vital to enable research and to boost its visibility. Special attention in the next years will be put on individual research grants from the German Research Foundation (DFG) and ERC grants as well as on increasing participation in Marie Curie actions within Horizon 2020, while maintaining the very good level of third-party funds obtained from federal programmes and industry partners. Regarding publications, we need discipline-specific quality standards that we aim to reach and can use to monitor our progress.

Finally, I consider the best possible support for early career researchers as key to excellence in research. We will roll out the support programme that we just introduced for early career researchers on their paths to professorships and will establish corresponding concepts for early career research groups in engineering departments. Particular focus will be put on systematically supporting leaders of early career research groups towards successful applications for DFG and ERC grants.

When it comes to supporting the creation of start-ups based on IP generated in research projects HIGHEST, our centre for innovation and entrepreneurship, has established several effective programs and activities, which we will further develop. The main focus of the work in the area of innovation, however, will be on the phases of orientation and validation in the process of knowledge and technology transfer – i.e., on bridging the gap between the end of research and start of the actual transfer. The long-term vision is to develop TU Darmstadt into an incubator for highly innovative and entrepreneurial personalities.

A strategic objective is the establishment of a dynamic culture of innovation and an environment that fosters innovation – stimulated by incentive schemes, programmes, infrastructure. Examples are: a comprehensive range of study programs on innovation and entrepreneurship, open innovations labs in focus areas, as well as systematic support for innovative project proposals to overcome critical barriers, for instance with the help of the newly set-up Pioneer Fund.
