Am I not the refugee? The homeless? (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)
This quotation from Goethe's Faust I describes an attitude to life that found its essential expression in literature and philosophy in the 20th century. Especially in the real world, the feeling of “being unhoused” manifests itself not least as a result of the destruction of the war, the expulsion and the fundamental insecurity about the values of Western culture and civilization. The trigger for the exhibition idea was the show, which was successfully organized last year in the Atelierhaus Darmstadt with the title “Heimat”. With (UN)BEHAUST – of houses and cities is now a continuation of this theme series. The project is curated by Georg Schrabeck, artist, supported by Julia Reichelt, curator of the Kunstforum of the TU Darmstadt.
In the globalized world of capitalism, metaphysical and existential homelessness gains new relevance. Anonymous and inhospitable big cities, the lack of affordable housing, rising homelessness, the up-to-the-minute problem of refugees add new aspects to this buzzword about man's homelessness. In view of the growing feeling of “homelessness”, the house and the city are questioned as real spaces for the “manure” of man.
A total of twenty artists from Berlin to Vienna deal with the lack of home feelings on the one hand, and on the other hand with the very specific lack of feeling at home, the lack of a roof over their heads and housing shortages. Various artistic positions and techniques are represented – photography, painting, drawing, sculpture, video. The exhibition project will be rounded off by a reading, guided tours and film.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog for the price of 5 euros.
