From Student to Alumni
International Alumna, Ambassador Masha is looking back

What do the #studentsofTUdarmstadt actually do when their time at TU Darmstadt is over? Of course, they become part of the TU Darmstadt alumni! Our former Ambassadors and now alumna Masha tells you exactly what that looks like and how the path can continue afterwards.

Alumni Network of TU Darmstadt

When your time at TU Darmstadt comes to an end, this does not mean that you are no longer connected to TUDa – on the contrary! The Alumni Network gives you the opportunity to stay in touch with TUDa. The regular newsletter keeps you informed about news and events. Some events are exclusively available to alumni. So be sure to register!

You can find the contact persons for the Alumni Network here. By the way, each department has its own contact person.

Masha's Story

My relationship with TU Darmstadt started back in 2019. I was visiting a friend who studied Materials Science at TUDa and he brought me to the library. It was love at first sight when I heard that ULB is open 24/7 during an exam phase. Back then I thought, how wonderful it would be to study here!

More about Masha

Masha,
M.A. Data and Discourse Studies

Of course, I was worried! New country, new educational system, foreign language. But I got help! Other students explained to me how everything works and what shall my first steps be.

Another Master's Degree? Data and Discourse Studies

However, I had already done a Master's and had no plans on doing a second one. I couldn't have known back then that in one year I would change my mind and decide to further educate myself. Among the various study programmes I considered, M.A. Data and Discourse Studies I liked the most.

TheM.A. Data and Discourse Studies programme is unique and exists only at TU Darmstadt. This programme accepts students with various academic backgrounds and covers a great number of disciplines. It allows choice so each of us could decide what our specialisation would be. Me, having a background in history, I went into the direction of digital history – which is a young and very exciting field.

This is what I really appreciate at TU Darmstadt – the interdisciplinary focus. Especially the implementation of a technical component in humanities.

Challenging Start of Online Studies

I started during the pandemic and it was a bit challenging. It required a different level of concentration, basically sitting in front of the computer all day long. Also the social aspect, you needed an extra effort to build connections. However, looking back I understand that I invested my time in the best way possible!

Masha,
M.A. Data and Discourse Studies

My last two semesters took place on-site and I could properly appreciate all the other things that TU has to offer! Campus, Unisport, movies in Audimax and of course the Library!

My first job in Germany

#studentsofTUdarmstadt was my first job in Germany! I started working shortly after the beginning of my studies. Tbh, it barely felt like work at all. Was more like a hobby, a place for creativity and a new niche to discover. It’s like I walked all the way jointly with the #studentsofTUdarmstadt and we have evolved together. We researched, we discovered, and we experimented. Becoming an Ambassador of the #studentsofTUdarmstadt was a firm and important step for me at the beginning.

At TU Darmstadt, you can always find a job via Stellenwerk, and any kind of support and advice, for example at the General Students' Committee (AStA) or at the Central Student Advisory and Orientation Office (ZSB).

Finally, I would like to tell you about the wonderful people I have met at TU Darmstadt. I got to know many gifted and ambitious young scientists! I made friends for life! I got shaped by the most inspiring and genius professors! And I had wonderful colleagues from whom I have learned a lot and with whom we walked all this way making our TU even better.

What’s next?

I am going to do my PhD now! And with my TU Darmstadt diploma, I was accepted to literally the best place you can do digital history. I am so excited and of course a bit nervous!

Masha

Hey! My name is Masha and I’m doing my master’s in Data and Discourse Studies. It always takes long to explain what exactly I am studying. My program is a kaleidoscope of disciplines and methods, which are weirdly and fruitfully intertwined together. For me it is a fusion of hobby and profession: languages, history, programming, philosophy! I love it how we mix approaches trying to gain this voluminous image of our world.
