TU Darmstadt is establishing twelve new assistant professorships (W2 with tenure track) and has now advertised all the positions concurrently. The university has thus started to implement the strategy which recently brought it success in the Tenure Track Programme to promote young academics run jointly by the Federation and the Länder.

TU Darmstadt was one of the 34 universities in Germany to be successful in the first round of the programme, which is being funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research to the tune of €1.4 million every year. With its strategy for junior researchers, TU Darmstadt is resolutely pursuing its course of promoting young academics by giving them a career boost and supporting conscious career decisions at the same time. For several years, TU Darmstadt’s experience of implementing a tenure track model has been very positive – after a fixed-term probationary period and a quality assessment, it opens up opportunities for young academics appointed to assistant professorships to become tenured professors.

TU Darmstadt wants to use its success in the Tenure Track Programme run by the Federation and the Länder to establish tenure track professorships as one of the relevant ways of achieving a tenured professorship in all its disciplines. In the mid-term, the university will designate roughly half of all appointments as tenure track professorships.
