New LOEWE Start professorship at the University of Gießen
Perception researcher Dr Katharina Dobs has been awarded a LOEWE start professorship at the Justus Liebig University of Gießen. Around 1.9 million euros in LOEWE funding will be provided over a total of six years for her research in applied computer science with a focus on cognitive systems. This will also help Hesse to strengthen the full proposal for the ‘The Adaptive Mind’ research network, in which the Technical University of Darmstadt is also involved, for the Excellence Strategy of the federal and state governments.

Understanding and shaping the formation of structures in soft matter

DFG Research Training Group 2516 with the participation of TU Darmstadt extended
The German Research Foundation is funding the Research Training Group ‘Control of the structural formation of soft matter at and by means of interfaces’ (GRK 2516) under the leadership of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) for a further four and a half years. Other members include the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, the Technical University of Darmstadt, and the University of Stuttgart. Leading researchers of the GRK are also significantly involved in CoM2Life, with which JGU and TU Darmstadt are applying for funding as a Cluster of Excellence.

Evaluation by experts has started
The evaluation phase for the Cluster of Excellence proposals has begun: the first Hessian cluster projects were evaluated by experts in Bonn. The projects under the leadership or participation of the TU Darmstadt ‘RAI’, ‘TAM’ and ‘CoM2Life’ will have the opportunity to convince the reviewers in January.

Successful concepts with biomaterials ryon Summer School under the motto ‘From idea to start-up’

The 2nd ryon Start-Up Summer School took place in Darmstadt in October 2024. Participants had the opportunity to take a look into the future of synthetic biology. Over five varied days, the international participants learnt a lot about business models and how to develop a business model from an idea into a professional pitch deck in just a few days. This year's event focussed on the topic of biomaterials in the context of the ‘CoM2Life’ cluster project, which is in the running for a top cluster in the renowned Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments.

LOEWE Start Professorship: Anna C. Bakenecker receives two million euros
Dr Anna C. Bakenecker has been awarded a LOEWE Start Professorship at TU Darmstadt. The expert in medical physics is working on the development, control and monitoring of nano- and microrobots that are designed to transport drugs to their target sites in the body. The LOEWE research funding programme of the state of Hesse is providing around two million euros over a period of six years.

Biotechnologist Andrea Belluati to lead new Emmy Noether group
A fascinating fusion of two worlds: A new Emmy Noether research group at TU Darmstadt focuses on hybrid systems that combine artificial and living cells to achieve functions that neither can perform alone. Biotechnologist Andrea Belluati is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) with 1.8 million euros for his project “Polymer Incorporation for the Engineering of Symbiosis” over the next six years. The newly designed hybrid systems might come to task in more effective drug delivery or sustainable biofuel production.
