New RMU Research Training Group examines the experiential dimension of democratic coexistence
On 1 April, the Research Training Group ‘Aesthetics of Democracy’, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), will start under the leadership of Goethe University Frankfurt and with the participation of TU Darmstadt, both of which are part of the Rhine-Main Universities (RMU). Spokesperson Professor Johannes Völz (Goethe University) and co-spokesperson Professor Sophie Loidolt (TU) present the research project in an interview.

‘Excellence Track Algebra’ launched
The Collaborative Research Centre ‘GAUS’ has been researching complex geometric and arithmetic objects since 2021. The Rhine-Main Universities Goethe University Frankfurt (as coordinator), TU Darmstadt and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (as associate partner) as well as the University of Heidelberg are involved. For the 2025/26 winter semester, the ‘Excellence Track Algebra’ has now been established as an in-depth, research-oriented programme for Master's students. Professor Timo Richarz presents the programme in an interview.

RMU Research Training Group meets for mid-term conference
Since 2023, the Research Training Group ‘Standards of Governance’ at TU Darmstadt and Goethe University Frankfurt – both part of the Rhine-Main Universities (RMU) – has been conducting research on the concept of ‘good governance’. At a conference, the researchers exchanged ideas on their research questions – ranging from supply chain legislation to forest protection. Spokesperson Professor Jens Steffek provides insight in an interview.

TU President participated in campaign by Rhine-Main universities
With their joint campaign “Waffles for Students,” the Rhine-Main Universities (RMU) have set an example for active cooperation and direct dialogue with students. TU Darmstadt was also part of the initiative: President Tanja Brühl handed out freshly baked waffles at the Bistro Stadtmitte today and talked to students.

Public funding increased more than tenfold
The AI Startup Rising (AISR) programme at the Hessian Centre for Artificial Intelligence (hessian.AI) demonstrates how targeted support can accelerate innovation. Since its launch in late 2021, the initiative has supported more than 200 AI start-up teams on their journey from research to market. By the end of 2025, these start-ups had raised over €60 million in funding and private investment – more than ten times the amount of public funding invested. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) and will continue until March 2027.

RMU launches new master's degree in particle accelerator science

The Rhine-Main Universities (RMU) are launching a new English-language master's program in particle accelerator science in the summer semester of 2026. This trilateral program brings together the region's exceptionally dense expertise in accelerator science in Germany and Europe and combines study and research at three locations: the Technical University of Darmstadt, Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.

On Friday, 16 January 2026, TU President Professor Tanja Brühl welcomed the First Mayor of Hamburg, Dr Peter Tschentscher, to the University. Together with Bijan Kaffenberger, member of the Hessian State Parliament, Tschentscher was the first guest of the Cluster of Excellence Reasonable Artificial Intelligence (RAI), which has been funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as one of 70 clusters since 01 January.
