Peter A. Grünberg
(*1939 †2018)

Peter A. Grünberg studied Physics at TH Darmstadt from 1963 until 1966. After obtaining his Diplom, he worked as a doctoral candidate at the TH Darmstadt Physics Department. In 1969, he obtained his degree of Dr. rer. nat. with his work on “Spectroscopic studies of certain rare-earth garnets”.

In 2007, Peter A. Gründberg won the Nobel Prize in Physics for the joint discovery of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) together with Albert Fert in the 1980s. The GMR effect brought the decisive breakthrough for gigabyte hard drives that can be found in any PC today.
