White collar immigrants in Germany

Over the past 50 years Germany has experienced several waves of large scale immigration. Among the immigrant, low skilled blue collar workers and refuges represent major groups. In recent years, under the umbrella of a new European Union immigration rule, a new immigrant group of highly qualified white collar immigrants came to Germany. So far this group has mostly been neglected in social research. Accordingly, information concerning social integration and the extent of problems of immigrants is scarce.

Currently we develop several small-scale studies focusing on various sub-groups of these blue collar immigrant from various English speaking countries (e.g. India, Oceania, United States). These studies mostly consist of qualitative interviews with members of these groups, their accompanying relatives, their employers, as well as their co-workers and subsequent analysis. We invite students to take part in this effort to better understand the consequences of this new type of immigration for the immigrants and for the receiving society.
