Description

The degree programme is defined by four focal areas one of which must be chosen:

  • Molecular Biomedicine / Genombiology
  • Molecular Biology/Synthetic Biology
  • Biodiversity and Functional Ecology
  • Area without focus

Students who don't want to focus on one subject, but want to structure their studies freely, can do this in the “area without focus”.

Admission Requirements for admission to the Master’s Degree programme (and thereby university enrollment) consist of a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the TU Darmstadt (benchmark degree) or an equivalent degree. Admission to the Master’s Degree programme may also depend on additional requirements. Specific degree entrance requirements may be found here and in the competences description. For further questions please contact the departmental advisor’s office. Information for students with degrees from universities abroad: International Admission.
Procedure As long as the requirements for admission (Entrance Requirements Verification) are fulfilled, there is no restriction on admission.

Special Features Enrolment in the M.Sc. Technical Biology programme is no more possible.

While the Bachelor of Science focuses mainly on the fundamentals of the field, the Master of Science builds directly on this foundation by providing more scientific depth and a more complete methodological and technological understanding of the field. In contrast to the Bachelor degree programme, the Master of Science enables and requires students to adopt their own major focus and to work towards their own independent academic, scientific research profile.

For these reasons it is recommended that students complete a Master of Science degree.

Upon successful completion of a Master of Science degree, there is the opportunity to begin working towards a Ph.D. either at the TU Darmstadt or at another national or international university: Ph.D. at TU Darmstadt

The Master’s degree programme prepares graduates for careers in industry, in university-external research institutes (e.g. research, development and production in the pharmaceutical and biotechnical industry or food industry), and also to undertake an individual research project as part of a doctoral programme.

Potential career areas for Master’s degree holders in technical biology include: pharmaceutical research, biotechnological research and production, chemistry, the environment and food industry, consulting and distribution in the chemical-pharmaceutical industry, scientific journalism, administrative and advisory functions in the fields of nature and environmental protection, evaluation of the consequences of technology, genetic technology, patent systems, biological safety and security, forensics, etc.
