Hessen-Wisconsin Program

With the Hessen-Wisconsin Program, an Exchange Program of the federal state Hessen and the University of Wisconsin System, Bachelor and Master students of universities in Hessen are able to study for one semester at one of the 12 partner universities of the University of Wisconsin System free of charge. As a participant you will get to know a new system of science, you will be able to establish new contacts and you will contribute to strengthen the relation between Wisconsin and Hessen as a student ambassador.

The Hessen-Wisconsin Program offers you the possibility to apply for a stay at one of the participating universities. The application is made via the TU Darmstadt.

Requirements

• Very good educational performance

• Good command of English

• A minimum of 3 (Bachelor) or 2 (Master) semesters have to be completed by the time of departure

• Willingness to undertake the role of the Hessen Student Ambassador

Please note the requirements of some of the participating universities of the University of Wisconsin System. The limitations and requirements must be considered in the application process, otherwise you cannot be chosen for a spot in the program. For example: UMASS-Amherst only accepts Master students. Dates of the program

Start and duration of the stay (only one semester at a time)

• Fall term: Start of September until Christmas

• Spring term: End of January until mid-May

Virtual office hours

Your complete application forms must be submitted in English language to the International Relations and Mobility Department via the Online-Platform. Applications by email or regular mail will not be accepted.

TU Darmstadt internal application forms as well as specific forms of the Hessen-Wisconsin Program must be completed. Please use only the forms provided for the Hessen-Wisconsin Program which are linked below!

Application Steps:

1. Online-Application of TU Darmstadt

  • Under the menu item “desired mobility” you must choose four universities of the program. Unlike among other exchange programs the faculty is not involved in the selection of the students.

2. Program forms that must be uploaded to the Online-Platform

You can find a summary of all requested application forms on the homepage of the program.
You will find all necessary samples there as well.

Please consider that all documents have to be submitted with the the application. It is not possible to hand in documents after the deadline.

1. Submitting the application at TU Darmstadt

2. Interviews at TU Darmstadt (virtual or in presence)

3. Conference of selection of all universities in Hessen

4. Distribution of acceptance and rejection letters

5. Application at guest university

6. Approval of guest university

For the application you need a TOEFL or IELTS Test. The language certificates must not be older than 2 years.

The following minimum score must be achieved: TOEFL: 86 or IELTS: 6,5. When taking the TOEFL-Test, please state the Institutional Code „B459“ of TU Darmstadt.

If your language of study or native language is not German, you must submit proof of B2-German level. Please add this to the certificate of English proficiency in your application.

Exception for the application in November 2023: DAAD language certificate (min. B2) is sufficient for the application to TU Darmstadt on November 15. In case of selection, a TOEFL or IELTS has to be handed in with an application to the host university until February 2023 (for mobility starting in Fall 2023)

Visa + passport (passport must be valid for minimum 6 month after the end of the program)

Finances

For the application at an American university you must prove that you command adequate funds. Depending on the place of residence this may require a sum between 9.000 and 15.000 US-Dollars. Further information about the financial aspects can also be found on the program website.
