Description

The Master of Science in Chemie degree programme enables students to obtain an in-depth education with a variety of opportunities for specialisation. The programme builds on knowledge and skills obtained during the Bachelor of Science degree in Chemie. It is also designed to fulfill the requirements for students to do independent research as part of a doctoral programme or to use their technical and scientific skills to work in industry, business, administration, research or teaching.

Students in the Master of Science degree programme in Chemie are required to choose three main subject areas from the following options:

Inorganic Chemistry; Biochemistry; Macromolecular Chemistry; Organic Chemistry; Physical Chemistry; Technical Chemistry; Theoretical Chemistry.

One of the three main subject areas will be chosen as the main area of specialisation. The course options in each of the three subject areas are divided into a theoretical module and a practical module. The subsequent advanced, research-oriented modules will build on this basis with another three theoretical and practical modules.

Graduates from Chemie typically go on to research careers in the chemical industry or at a university. For this reason it makes sense for holders of Bachelor’s degrees to do a Master’s degree. The Master of Science in Chemie is designed to train graduates who can successfully meet various challenges in their future careers. Graduates may take up careers in industry, for example, or in research institutes (e.g. research, development and production in the chemical or pharmaceutical industry) or engage in research as part of a doctoral programme.

Students of Chemie will acquire a broad foundation in the natural sciences in the initial semesters and be confronted with various interdisciplinary issues. It therefore makes sense for Bachelor degree holders to choose to do a Master’s degree in any of the related science departments.

For this reason it is important to start early in the degree programme to gain practical work experience in relevant organisations. In this way students can promote themselves as competent professionals in practice and make important professional contacts. The likelihood of finding a good position is definitely heightened if the student is flexible when it comes to commuting or even moving abroad. Good English language skills are particularly important when it comes to the international job market.
