Description

The M.Sc. Biomedical Engineering expands and deepens knowledge and skills in engineering sciences and human medicine. It is supported by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the TU Darmstadt in cooperation with the Department of Medicine of the Goethe University Frankfurt. 80% of the course content is offered by the TU Darmstadt (e.g. engineering sciences, computer science, social sciences and humanities). 20% of the course content is offered by the Goethe University Frankfurt (human medicine).

The students' involvement in current research reinforces the high level of application relevance. The following thematic focuses are available for selection:

Medical Imaging and Image Processing (BB); Radiation Physics and Technology in Medicine (ST); Digital Dentistry and Surgical Robotics and Navigation (DC); Actuators, Sensors and Neurostimulation (ASN).

The degree “Master of Science” is equivalent to the academic degree “Diplom-Ingenieur”.

The programme offers the greatest possible freedom of choice for students, a broad subject/technical range through teaching imports from, among others, the fields of economics, social and human sciences, material sciences, mechanical engineering and computer science at the TU Darmstadt, and a practical range in medicine. In the research-oriented Master's programme, the knowledge already acquired in the Bachelor's programme is further deepened.

Language German. Scientific literature may have to be read and processed in English. Individual courses/modules may be offered in English.
Programme Start winter semester (recommended) or summer semester (programme schedule not guaranteed). The programme starts in the winter semester 2021/22.
Admission Applying with international qualifications (language requirements, application deadlines): International Admission.
Requirements for admission to the Master’s degree programme are comprised of a “Bachelor of Science” degree in Biomedical Engineering of the Technical University of Darmstadt and of the Goethe' University or an equivalent degree. Admission to the Master’s Degree programme may also depend on additional requirements. Specific degree entrance requirements may be found here and in the competences description.

Special Features
  • Proof of sufficient vaccination in accordance with the currently valid infection protection legislation for those working in medical institutions must be submitted as a prerequisite for admission to the first module in Area B Medical Basics. Further admission requirements: see study regulations.
  • The final thesis can be carried out at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the TU Darmstadt, but also at the Department of Medicine at Goethe University. The prerequisite in the latter case is that the thesis is supervised by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology.

Upon successful completion of a Master of Science degree, there is the opportunity to begin working towards a Ph.D. either at the Technical University of Darmstadt or at another national or international university: Ph.D. at Technical University of Darmstadt

Biomedical Engineering is considered a promising discipline with high growth potential. Accordingly, the opportunities for graduates of this degree programme on the job market are very good – not least because they are offered a large number of fields of activity.

Biomedical engineers are employed, for example, in the medical technology industry, in hospitals and various branches of the electrical industry. There they work in the areas of development, construction, assembly, manufacturing, production, system planning, quality assurance and management, among others. Due to their interdisciplinary knowledge and their ability to think in terms of systems technology, they are particularly qualified to take on management functions.

It is important to start early in the degree programme to gain practical work experience in relevant organisations. In this way students can promote themselves as competent professionals in practice and make important professional contacts. The likelihood of finding a good position is definitely heightened if the student is flexible when it comes to commuting or even moving abroad. Good English language skills are particularly important when it comes to the international job market.
