TU Darmstadt promotes and supports early career researchers who are already in the qualification phase for professorship (R3) or management positions in science in a special way on this career path through funding programmes, training offers, grant application and career counselling as well as by organizing networking events.
Various attractive parallel running options and career paths are offered to early career researchers during the qualification phase for professorship (R3) at TU Darmstadt besides the habilitation, with the aim to make the individual career path to permanent professorship or the qualification for the post more plannable at an early career phase (see illustration).
The assistant professorship with tenure track (W2) leads to a permanent W2 professorship after a successfull tenure evaluation. Assistant professorships (W1) and junior research group leaders appointed to assistant professorships (W1) can also be appointed to a permanent W2 professorship in an ad personam procedure if excellent performance is present. The junior research group leaders of the funding programmes set up at TU Darmstadt are also eligible for appointment upon successful qualification.
TU Darmstadt set up the two programmes Athene Young Investigator (AYI) and UNICO-Young Investigator (UNICO) for outstanding early career researchers to apply for leading junior research groups with the aim to qualify for professorship at an early stage of the career (AYI) or gain further academic qualification alongside a career in industry (UNICO).
In addition, highly qualified early career researchers can apply for the national and international funding programmes to receive funds to lead junior research groups.
