Linguistic and Literary Computing

Master of Arts; language: German and English

Enrolment in the first or a higher semester of the programme will be possible for the last time in the 2027 summer semester. The programme can be studied as a standard degree. Upon request, a transfer to the successor programme Digital Philology (M.A.) will be possible from the winter semester 2027/28.

Description

The bilingual (German and English) Master of Arts programme in Linguistic and Literary Computing acquaints the students with digital resources, infrastructures and methods in regard to philology.

The two main areas of specialisation are Computer Philology and Corpus and Computer-based Linguistics.

Additionally, computer programming and an English language course (levels C1 – C2 GER) are part of the programme.

Structure of the degree program

The degree programme is divided into five topic areas:

•Digital Humanities: Introduction

•Linguistic and Literary Computing

•Corpus and Computer Linguistics

•Computer Philology

•English Language skills

•Computer Science

Information on the areas of specialisation:

Computer Philology looks into questions of media-based and digital rendering of texts from literary and cultural contexts. This regards, among others, the medial aspects of texts and their digital rendering in editions, and computer-aided search in larger texts.

Corpus and Computer-based Linguistics have at their core the computer-aided analysis of linguistic data bases, the so-called corpora. Students learn the systematic and reproductable analysis of linguistic questions.

The programme is completed with a Master’s Thesis.

Language German and English. Please be aware that scientific literature is be read and edited also in English or other foreign languages.
Start of studies Winter semester recommended; summer semester possible without study guarantee
Internship Completing several internships throughout the programme is recommended particularly regarding professional orientation.
Admission requirements 1. A degree B.A. Digital Philology or J.B.A. Digital Philology of TU Darmstadt (reference programme) or an equivalent degree
2. Proof of language proficiency: English at C1 (GER) level, required documents e.g. Equivalence Table/German (for international applicants)
3. Passed Entrance requirements verification in accordance with the Competences description

Angewandte Linguistik, M.A

The Master of Arts Linguistic and Literary Computing program gives graduates access to professional fields that require a sound linguistic and corpus linguistic and/or computer philological qualification.

In principle, the professional fields of application for linguists are widely diversified. There are mainly employment opportunities at universities, in teaching and research in literature and linguistics as well as in language teaching in private schools. Further fields of activity are found in school or specialist book editorships, in publishing houses (e.g. in editing), in editorial offices of radio, television and newspapers, in PR and advertising agencies, in libraries and archives, in international organisations, Goethe Institutes and in the cultural sector (e.g. as dramaturge at the theatre). With additional business management qualifications, they can also work in commercial enterprises (e.g. in sales and marketing or in human resources).

It is therefore important to gain practical experience in relevant institutions at an early stage, to prove your general practicality and to establish contacts. The prospect of a good position is increased by the willingness to be professionally mobile, even abroad. A good knowledge of English is highly recommended, especially if you have an international orientation.
