While the Bachelor of Arts degree in focuses mainly on the fundamentals of the field, the Master of Arts builds directly on this foundation by providing more breadth and depth scientifically and a more complete insight into the field. In contrast to the Bachelor degree programme, the Master of Arts enables and requires students to adopt their own major focal area and to work towards their own independent academic, scientific research profile. For these reasons it is recommended that students complete a Master of Arts degree.

Upon successful completion of a Master of Arts degree, there is the opportunity to begin working towards a Ph.D. either at the TU Darmstadt or at another national or international university: Ph.D. at TU Darmstadt

Various career options are open to students after finishing their degree. Practical experience from internships, including relevant references, often play a role in beginning a career, given the unique, expert profile that graduates have established.

The Master oft Arts in Educational Sciences is particularly suited to establishing an academic, scientific career at universities and research institutes, but also with university-external educational institutes, for example for adult education (e.g. evening colleges, company training institutes), political parties and associations. Educational experts also find positions in the advisory field (e.g. educational counselling, marriage counselling or with advisory centers in public/government service or private companies).

For this reason it is important to start early in the degree programme to gain practical work experience in relevant organisations. In this way students can promote themselves as competent professionals in practice and make important professional contacts. The likelihood of finding a good position is definitely heightened if the student is flexible when it comes to commuting or even moving abroad. Good English language skills are particularly important when it comes to the international job market.
