Enrolment in the first or a higher semester is possible for the last time in the 2027 summer semester. Re-registration is possible until the 2029/30 winter semester; until then, the programme can be studied as usual. Upon request, it will then also be possible to transfer to the successor programme Historische Praxis (M.A.).

Description

The Master of Arts in History programme consists primarily of elective courses with a focus on research. It enables students to specialise in a specific area, to participate in up-to-date research projects, and it offers the opportunity to acquire teaching skills as student tutors. The compulsory internship in a relevant field gives the student practical experience to lay the groundwork for a post-university career.

A mentoring system is in place to guide and advise the student over the four semesters. A semester abroad is not mandatory but nevertheless strongly recommended and is ideally integrated into the third semester.

To broaden career perspectives, an internship of at least nine weeks' duration is an integral part of the programme.

If the topic of „Vormoderne“ is chosen as the focus of the thesis, proof of successful completion of Latin courses I and II at the Language Centre of TU Darmstadt or comparable achievements must be provided when registering for the Master's thesis.

The job market for historians is generally broad and varied. Graduates are especially sought after for positions at universities and institutes or in teaching and research of history. Jobs in archives or in the cultural fields, for example in exhibition planning or in art and culture management, are obvious choices, as well.

Other career opportunities can be found in schoolbook and textbook editing, in publishing houses (e.g. in editing), in radio, TV and newspaper editorial teams, in PR and advertisement agencies, in libraries and archives, in international organisations as well as in the cultural sector. In this context it may also play a role which second component the students have chosen within the Joint Bachelor of Arts. With additional business qualifications, they can find employment in business enterprises (e.g. in marketing and distribution or in human resources).

It is important to start early in the degree programme to gain practical work experience in relevant organisations. This way students can promote themselves as competent professionals in practice and make important professional contacts. The likelihood of finding a good position is definitely heightened if the student is flexible when it comes to commuting or even moving abroad. Good English language skills are particularly important when it comes to the international job market.
